IKEA’s The Vappeby Bluetooth speaker is the fanciest lamp you’ll take camping. It even features Spotify Tap, for seamless streaming.

Looking a little like a bedside lamp and Darth Vader had a bizarre baby, IKEA brings us its latest portable speaker. The Swedish furniture store has created a number of Bluetooth speakers already, all very much with design in mind. With that in mind, it’s unlikely that IKEA speakers will stand up much against the likes of the Sonos Roam, or other big name players.

So far, no solid specs for The Vappeby have been revealed. But, here’s what we do know so far…

The Vappeby

This battery-powered lamp/portable speaker is the perfect companion for summer camping trips. At an accessible $65 (US)/£49, it may not be the best Bluetooth speaker in terms of audio quality, but does make for a great practical and affordable music solution on the go.

The low price, and the fact IKEA doesn’t specialise in audio, is all we have to go off in terms of sound quality. Whilst it might be a little unfair to judge without real specs, that’s not to say this speaker isn’t any good. It offers an IP65 rating, making it resistant to any dust or debris you might encounter whilst camping. It offers 360 degree sound, so it’s a great centrepiece for social gatherings.

IKEA claims that this is the first portable speaker to feature Spotify Tap. Currently this feature is only present on earbuds. Spotify Tap allows you to resume listening to music where you left off, with one simple tap on the hardware.

The Vappeby offers a generous 12-hours of battery life, and can be charged via USB-C. You’ll be able to get your hands on one in April, just in time for summer. Choose between either light grey, or a dark greyish blue.
