Bucking the trend of social media platforms playing catch up with TikTok, the video-sharing platform may finally be joining the stories party. TikTok has seen its popularity soar in recent years. Platforms like Instagram have endeavoured to match TikTok, doubling the length of Reels since TikTok extended its own video length limit. However, the latest news from TikTok unexpectedly flips this pattern.
Just about every social media platform has a stories feature, mimicking the original Snapchat feature launched in 2013. Across platforms, stories are images and videos shared by users, that generally last 24 hours before being automatically deleted. This feature is now being experimented with on TikTok, as spotted by “social media consultant”, Matt Navara.
TikTok stories appear to work very similarly to Snapchat and Instagram. A new slide-over sidebar reveals a “create” button, enabling you to add content. You can add captions, music and text. Users can interact with stories, reacting and responding to them. They are also able to tap on someone’s profile picture in order to view their stories. The main difference between TikTok stories and Instagram is that it seems stories must be videos rather than images too.
It is reported that a TikTok spokesperson describes the feature as “a new way to interact with your fans”. Speaking to The Verge, TikTok stated, “currently we’re experimenting with ways to give creators additional formats to bring their creative ideas to life for the TikTok community”.
However, there is little information regarding how extensively the feature will be tested, or if it will be rolled out more widely.
